Address data moves between systems, teams, and file formats, and the work of cleaning it up tends to happen wherever the person responsible feels most comfortable. That pattern has shaped how we have built our cleanse products over the years. The newest addition to that family is an Address Cleanse add-in for Microsoft Excel, which validates and enriches UK address data.

## Our Cleanse solutions

Our [Cleanse API](https://docs.ideal-postcodes.co.uk/docs/api/address-cleanse) is the option teams reach for when they want to build address cleansing directly into their own systems. [Bulk Cleanse](https://ideal-postcodes.co.uk/contact-us) handles larger, one-off database jobs where it helps to have our team involved. [ClickCleanse](https://cleanse.ideal-postcodes.co.uk/) covers the in-between case, where someone has a CSV, a browser, and up to 1,100 addresses to clean in one sitting.

The Excel add-in extends the same service into the workbook itself and has no limit to the number of rows you can cleanse.

## Why Excel deserved its own integration

A lot of address work still happens in spreadsheets, particularly in operations, finance, and customer service teams. These are often the people closest to the data and the least likely to have a developer on hand to help with an API. Until now, cleansing a spreadsheet of addresses meant exporting the file to a different tool, running it through, and reimporting the results. The Excel add-in removes that round trip.

### Features

The add-in calls the same underlying Cleanse service as our other products, so the data quality and sources are consistent across the solutions.

Once installed, a **Cleanse** button appears on the Home ribbon and opens a task pane on the right. From there, you can:

- Select a column of addresses and run **Cleanse Selection**, which writes 31 columns of structured results immediately to the right of your input
- Optionally select two columns, with the second used as a postcode hint to help disambiguate matches
- Use **Write Headers** to drop labelled column headings above your data

### Data returned

Each cleansed row returns 31 columns of structured data, including:

- **Formatted address fields**: address lines, town, postcode, and country, standardised against Royal Mail's Postcode Address File
- **Confidence score** and overall **fit indicator** showing how reliable each match is
- **Per-element match levels** for organisation, premise, street, locality, town, and postcode
- **UPRN and UDPRN**, included at no extra cost
- **Rooftop-accurate geocodes** (latitude, longitude, eastings, northings), also included at no extra cost
- **Administrative data** such as district, ward, and county

The [address cleanse guide](https://ideal-postcodes.co.uk/guides/address-cleanse) covers what each field means in more detail.

Results are written as plain values rather than live formulas, so the workbook can be saved, shared, and reopened by anyone without the add-in or an API key. A teammate reviewing the file later does not need to install anything to read the results.

## Try it and let us know what you think

The add-in works in Excel for the Web, Excel for Windows, and Excel for Mac. The [installation guide](https://docs.ideal-postcodes.co.uk/docs/integrations/excel) walks through the setup steps. New accounts include free test credits.

We would also welcome your feedback. If something could work better for the way your team handles address data, please get in touch at [support@ideal-postcodes.co.uk](mailto:support@ideal-postcodes.co.uk).
