Businesses capture address data in some form, whether through a checkout, a signup form, an onboarding process, or a CRM. A verified address is useful on its own. It tells a business where a customer, property, or organisation is located and helps ensure that parcels, letters, and other communications reach the right place.

But an address can tell you much more.

By adding identifiers, geographic coordinates, property data, and other relevant datasets, businesses can turn a basic postal address into a much richer record. That enriched record can support everything from delivery routing and customer segmentation to compliance, fraud prevention, risk assessment, and customer service.

Adding more useful information based on an address is called address data enrichment. But how does it differ from ‘Address validation’? What kinds of information typically get added, and why does it matter for businesses?

This process is known as **address data enrichment**. So, what exactly is address data enrichment? How is it different from address validation? And what kinds of information can be added to an address? Let’s take a look.

## What Is Address Data Enrichment? 

Address data enrichment is the process of adding additional information to an address record to make it more useful for business processes, analysis, and decision-making.

Instead of storing only a postal address, an enriched address record might also contain:

- a Unique Property Reference Number (UPRN)
- latitude and longitude coordinates
- local authority and administrative boundaries
- parliamentary constituency information
- property or building attributes
- industry-specific risk data
- customer suppression indicators

The purpose of enrichment is that it gives businesses more to work with, so that a single address can support a wider range of decisions and processes.

## Address Validation vs Address Enrichment: What's the Difference? 

The terms address validation and address enrichment are often used interchangeably, but they describe two different things.

**Address validation,** such as [address finder](https://ideal-postcodes.co.uk/address-finder) or [postcode lookup](https://ideal-postcodes.co.uk/postcode-lookup), checks whether an address is recognised, correctly formatted, and consistent with an authoritative address dataset.

In the UK, for example, addresses are commonly checked against sources such as Royal Mail’s Postcode Address File (PAF). Validation helps businesses correct formatting issues, reduce data-entry errors, and capture recognised postal addresses.

**Address enrichment** adds further data to that address, giving it more context and connecting it to other systems and datasets. It builds on top of an address that has already been verified.

## What Data Can Be Added During Address Enrichment? 

The fields available depend on the enrichment provider, underlying datasets, and industry requirements. Some of the most useful types of address enrichment data include the following.

#### Unique Property Reference Number (UPRN)

A [Unique Property Reference Number](https://ideal-postcodes.co.uk/uprn), or UPRN, is a unique identifier assigned to an addressable location in Great Britain, maintained through GeoPlace and Ordnance Survey. UPRNs provide businesses and public-sector organisations with a consistent way to refer to a property, even when the way its postal address is written changes. This makes the UPRN particularly valuable for data matching.

For example, one system might store a flat address differently from another. Comparing the text of the two addresses may not always produce a reliable match. If both records contain the same UPRN, however, the systems have a common identifier they can use.

#### Geolocation (latitude and longitude)

[Geolocation](https://ideal-postcodes.co.uk/guides/geocodes) enrichment adds latitude and longitude coordinates to an address. Instead of knowing only the postal description of a property, a business also knows approximately where that property sits geographically. These coordinates are useful for a wide range of tasks, including delivery routing, service area checks, catchment analysis, and any kind of spatial reporting.

Geolocation is particularly useful for businesses using mapping platforms, logistics systems, or Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

#### Administrative and geographic data

Enrichment can also include information about the administrative areas the address falls within, such as the local authority, ward, parliamentary constituency, and country. This information can be useful when a business needs to understand where its customers, properties, or operations are concentrated.

For example, a company could use administrative data to produce reports by local authority, assign customers to regional teams, understand demand across different areas, or determine which rules or services apply to a particular location.

#### Sector-specific datasets

Some address enrichment datasets are designed for particular industries. These datasets connect the property or location with information that is directly relevant to a specific business process.

For an [insurance provider](https://ideal-postcodes.co.uk/sector/insurance), for example, property enrichment might include indicators relating to:

- flood risk
- subsidence risk
- property characteristics
- environmental factors
- other location-based underwriting information

These datasets add depth to an address record where a general-purpose dataset would fall short. They are particularly valuable for businesses whose operations depend on understanding the specific characteristics of a property, not just its location.

#### Suppression data

Address enrichment can also help businesses determine whether they should contact someone at an address. Two of the most widely used examples in the UK are the National Change of Address (NCOA) file, which flags addresses where the resident has moved, and The Bereavement Register (TBR), which flags addresses where a resident has passed away.

As well as reducing wasted communications and associated costs, suppression data helps organisations maintain more accurate customer records and communicate more responsibly.
