As the UK government eases the lockdown restrictions, many are worried about the new Indian variant and how it will affect the relaxation of the rules. The Indian mutation of the Coronavirus was first located in India in October 2020 and has since then spread to a number of countries including the UK.

Also known as B.1.617.2 or Delta, the Indian variant is a more powerful mutation than the Kent variant as it spreads more quickly. Across the UK, there are now around 42,323 cases of the variant detected. This virus was responsible for the surge in cases over the winter in the UK.

A new interactive map created by the Sanger Institute, which was funded by The Department for Health and Social Care Testing Innovation Fund and Wellcome, shows the locations where the Indian variant is.

The areas below have been identified where the Indian variant is:

  • Bolton

  • Leicester

  • Kirklees

  • London Borough of Hounslow

  • Bedford

  • Blackburn with Darwen

  • Burnley

  • North Tyneside
